The first two didn't work as well as I'd have liked. I then heard from some blog or other (it was a long, long search) that the dharma rc's handled the audio a bit differently.

So I looked around for other players that had the capabilities of this while preserving some kind of 10 ft usability from the couch. The stable release candidates (the last I tried at least a few months ago) gave me problems with dts wav. I would stick to the dharma release candidates as they seem to handle dts files somewhat differently. If I'm not mistaken it will also work with dsd, but I have not tried that yet. It plays aiff files too but I have not ever had one work as a 5.1 file so I never use it to encode anything. I have the latest Miles Davis vinyl release ripped by a person with a much much better turntable than I will ever possess and XBMC handles it no problem as well. It also will handle 24/192 stereo with no problems as well. It can sometimes take a second or two to load the library if you have it stored in multiple places and you have a VERY large library (10000 plus). I have had no problems with audio cut outs and the like. I have a Drobo I use for media storage which is quite slow as far as external hdds go. Seems to handle 5.1 24/96 without a hitch depending on your set up of course. I use it all the time for that express purpose. They exists how do we send them out the firewire output? And I'm not talking DTS or Dolby Digital, I'm talking audiophile-quality multichannel wavs or FLACs.

One single firewire cable will carry multichannel, so it begs another question.the subject of this thread.are there any software players out there that will play up to 24/96 multichannel music on a MAC? I'm open to minimalist GUI, etc. What with the onset of DVD-A rippers and SACD-to-PCM conversions, the thought of storing multichannel, taking multichannel files off the hard disk and playing them (mono sets or multichannel wavs/FLACs) makes perfect sense. It's the multichannel version of a cd transport. This necessitates disc playback, of course.

One way is to mod a universal player like an Oppo and use the 3-4 S/PDIF boards to run digital from the player to the DAC (via S/PDIF/XLR impedance transformers and then a DB-25 snake).

I'm looking for digital options there.Īs I find firewire DACs like the Metric Halo LIO-8 it begs the question of how to take advantage of the multiple DAC inputs/outputs available in these multichannel units. Although I am a big 2 channel guy, I also have a very hi-end multichannel setup. I've been demoing many DACs over the past 8-12 months.
